Event 08: Synopsis of a Cultural Trip to Fujian Province, Southern China (Aug 2023)


Culture is a pattern of behaviours passed down from generations and has formed the characterisitcs of a certaiin population.

Food Culture is an essential component of Culture, together with ethnicity, heritage and communication, food culture reflects the essence of the Culture.

Many of our Singapore Chinese ancestors are migrants from China, mostly from Fujian (Hokkien and Hakka), Guangzhou (Cantonese), Shantou (Teochew), Meizhou (Hakka), Qingyuan, Foshan and so on. The younger generations nowadays are extremely interested to find their roots and understand the culture of their dialects.

A Grain of Rice is organising a tour to Fujian Province, Southern China, this coming Aug 2023. The tour will visit places of interest as well as some cultural activities like food cultural exchange and traditional village visits.

The tour includes:

  • (1) Tianhou Palace (Heavenly Empress Palace) at beautiful Quanzhou (UNESCO Maritime Silk Route). Empress Mazu is originated from Putian County of Quanzhou and has the earliest Tianhou Temple built during the Sung Dynasty in Year 1196. The 9,000 square meters Temple is another UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site and has enormous architectural, historical and cultural merits.

  • (2) Jiang ware Museum, where enormous display of Sung Dynasty Jiang wares (Tenmoku) can be seen.

  • (3) Tulou, the Hakka Earth Building, which was also in existence for nine hundred over years. These buildings housed Hakka people who belonged to the same clan, with added intention of defending themselves from other clans and dialects.

    • • Cook Singapore style cuisines for local villagers. • Taste the world famous cocktail, The Singapore Sling, at a foreign land.

    • • Taste popular Fujian tea – three of China’s top ten most popular tea .

    • • Taste of local authentic cuisines.

    • • Capture events and tour highlights in a post-event magazine which are issued to all participants.

    • • Capture of events and tour highlights in short videos which will be shared on few famous Social Platforms.
